Peter Rider has just written to Grant Flower thanking him for taking the men's coaching on Tuesday

We are the Champions!
We won the Bertie Joel Cup Final today. Shenfield 221-7 in 45 overs, Waltham 203 all out (41.1 overs).
At the time this great news is being written, the coachload of players and supporters who travelled to
Ealing are still celebrating! They were very lucky with the weather, there being no loss of play for rain,
despite it raining in Essex for most of the afternoon, heavy at times.

The Dukes Essex Twenty20
starts with a home tie against Old Brentwoods, next Tuesday 8th June. The game starts at 5.30pm. All
support will be welcome as will your custom at the bar. Its much cheaper than forking out to see the Essex
Eagles and there's a wider range of beverages on offer. You may, however, be forced into viewing one or two
players in tight fitting coloured outfits as a result of laundry/dieting issues!

CCC Cup 3rd Round
we have been drawn away to Tunbridge Wells on Sunday 13th June. Their ground is arguably one of the
most picturesque in the country and indeed Kent are playing a County Championship and a Twenty20 game there
the week before we pitch up. Again, all support welcome.

Stop Press
We are through to the 3rd round of the CCC Cup. It was pleasing to note the significant contributions
made by some of our youngsters - M Simmons, O Bailey and J Kavanagh. Not forgetting the oldies, D Wright
took 5 wickets for 41 runs.

Doing Well!
In the Shepherd Neame League, the 1st XI is joint top with Ardleigh Green, the 2nd XI is top, four
points clear of Chelmsford and the 3rd XI is in third place. Our new 4th XI is in fourth place, having been
unlucky in having their first match washed out. It's early in the season, but it is a very long time since
things looked so good! Next week sees the first three teams face South Woodford, strong contenders currently
placed third in the 1st table XI table. We've done well in the Cup matches too, having got through to the
third round of the League Cup and the second round of the CCC Cup.

Working Parties
All hands needed on deck! As usual there are some preparations to be made to the cricket pavilion and
its surroundings, and the club committee would appreciate your support at the pre-season working parties on
Saturdays 27th March and 3rd April from 10am.
There will be plenty of indoor and outdoor jobs to be done in order to prepare the clubhouse and grounds, so
please bring your toolbox, gardening shears, paint brushes, dress up in your Saturday Worst and help us get
the season off to a flying start.
It would be helpful if you could let Allan Salisbury know if you are coming and if you have any particular
DIY skills.

Sad News
We have recently learned that Bill Dixon passed away shortly before Christmas. The President has sent
condolences to his family, on behalf of the club. Before retiring to Suffolk, Bill was a long-standing,
valuable member of the club and was voted in as a Life Vice-President in 1986. He was 1st XI umpire (1980s,
pre Panel Umpires) and an outstanding, irrepressible fundraiser. It was hard to resist his cheerful smile as
he lightened your wallet! Twice, in the 1980s, he even got members to provide spare beds for an entire Welsh
male voice choir who came to put on concerts to raise funds for the club!

Shenfield Old Boys — where are you?
WE NEED YOU! We are putting together a contact list of former Shenfield players. Please email
David.Castell@ThomsonReuters.com
with your details to be added to the list.
Would you like the opportunity to play the occasional game?
In July this year a dozen of our players will be off to Barbados on tour with Shenfield High School. In
their absence we’re looking to former players and colts’ parents to play the odd game to fill the breach.
And if you fancy an indoor net before the season then David can arrange that and maybe buy the odd beer to
help you rehydrate. If you just want to join the email list so you can be informed of social gatherings then
that’s fine too.
