The season finale predictably ended in another defeat, this time at the hands of Belhus, whose victory saw them immediately return to the Premier division having come down with us last season. A comfortable six wicket win for the hosts was endemic of our season.
Winning the toss, Belhus put us in to bat, knowing our fragility would be a deciding factor. Uzi retired hurt at the end of the fourth over after taking a blow to the shoulder, so we actually didn't lose our first wicket until the 10th over with the score on 38, young Ackers falling for 12. A 50 partnership followed between Jackpot and Arnie, with Jackpot playing the role of "Punisher" as he brought an aggressive style of batting to the crease, not seen for many a week. Arnie had only scored six before being removed as Jackpot went on to his second half century of the season (5x4's, 3x6's)before holing out. At 100-3 and Uzi already returned to the crease, a decent/defendable score looked on the cards; but, eight wickets were to fall for 57, despite a battling 37 from Graham, who was the last wicket to fall. A total of 157 was never enough to defend. It was a case of damage limitation.
A wicket in the fourth over from Griller gave us a fragment of hope. However, a partnership of 61 put us back on the defensive. An inspired fielding change saw Graham take a smart catch at slip for the second wicket. Jack Plom was involved in a third wicket partnership of 45 before trying one reverse shot too many and was caught at the wicket. Drinks were taken and a golden duck followed. All three wickets had been taken by leading wicket taker Big Al, which made the game last as long as the 30 overs it took them to reach their target.
So trips to Southend, Westcliff-On-Sea and Fairlop are on the card for next season. A short stint in Division 2 should be the wake-up call needed to re-vitalise us. See you next season.........................................
