A hot day in the Sun and the 4s were on fire!
Our local rivals, that butterfly feeling in the stomach. The anticipation. Can we overcome our local rivals and remain top of the table? A new 4s side took shape over the week with 5 debutants in the Bowden Era.
The toss was lost. However, the Brentwood Captain must have had delusions of 25 big ones and opted to bat first, an interesting decision to say the least being 30 degrees out in the sunshine and the 4s well coveted ability to bat bat bat bat bat for the draw.
The decision to bat first was unsurprisingly regretted very quickly when El Capitano picked up the new ball to groans from the away fans. With Nilbert at the other end it was always going to be a grind from the opposing batsmen, the opening 12 overs going for just 25 runs and knocking off 4 of the opposition batsmen. Debutants Jude Hearn and Max Proctor both bowled exceptionally well both going for less than 4 runs an over. HMN was the pick of the bowlers with figures of (5-2-6-2), the Brentwood faithful couldn’t get near the accurate ball outside off stump. Some questionable drops from Richy Rich Adamson at slip allowed Brentwood to claw back into the game with 2 drops, Brentwood driving on from 55-7 to 102-8. The Carrot and Stick approach to leadership in the 4s saw VC Nilbert losing the plot at mid off, a mixture of the hot sun and seeing 2 drops in the slips, crying out for us to just get this over with so we could have a bat. El Capitano obeyed and bowled 2 further balls before the innings was up leaving Brentwood 110 all out.
110 … Possibly a bridge too far for the 1’s but with the 4’s a sense of anticipation as the Mystery Spinner stepped out to opening the batting. Swinging from the hip from ball 1 with 2 4’s and a single giving him 9 off 3. Sadly he had a change of heart ball 4 and decided to play a defensive shot to no avail, playing all round it and being bowled for 9. Harry McNeil (18) and Richard Adamson (22) (2 & 3) put on another 40 runs taking us to 50-2. A few wasteful shots left us at 70-5, El Capitano had been waiting for the 75 run mark to crack open the Gavi di Gavi but it wasn’t to be, having to pad up to steady the ship. Debutant Joey Newbould who had already taken a catch with the gloves went on to score 16* at one end with El Capitano making the remaining 24 in the usual slow fashion.
The U13’s did themselves proud today, overall a rather stress free finish. Especially for Ricky Rich Adamson pictured asleep with cigarette in hand ahead of his bat at Number 3.
