The 4’s made the short drive over to Harold Wood for our first of four fixtures against our opponents this summer.
El Capitano won the toss to make it 4/5 this season and elected to bowl. The idea of bowling a side out on the astroturf pitch not taking my fancy.
The Harold Wood side started slowly, with Vice Captain Nilbert continuing as he left of against Brentwood bowling 8 overs for just 9 runs taking 2 wickets in the process while El Capitano went for 6 runs in the same time but with no luck. Their opener being stumped on his third ball but not given by square leg … To walk or not to walk? The not walk proved the answer this time. After 20 overs the home side had managed just 43 runs, unfortunately the 4’s, like in our match against Brentwood let the match get away from our iron grip. The Home side putting on 100 of their runs in the middle 20. The heat had probably got to some of our bowlers, as we bowled a total of 53 extras which top scored for the oppo. Luckily we had an ace up our sleeve with Jack the Whacker’s leg spin providing both turn and bounce on the astro. He bowled 8 overs conceding just 16 runs and taking 2 wickets, one of which was possibly the most plumb LBW we had ever seen. In the end we managed to restrict the home side to 158 runs, a score we were confident on chasing down on a pitch we can only describe as a batting paradise.
The 4’s were led out to bat by a Club Legend and Mr Technique Harry Shorey. The pair put on 25 runs before Dave chopped on for 18, leaving him very disappointed on a deck that deserved a ton. Holland and Big Biffa were the next pair in both scoring quickly at a run a ball or more. The former adding 13 to the total and the latter 20 including 2 big ones. At 104-4 El Capitano begrudgingly put his pads on in case his batting services were needed but he needn’t have worried. The steady hand of Dowlen Snr who in the words of Ben Holland was “rolling back the years” and Jack the Whacker’s more brutalist touch saw us over the line. The Whacker scoring 50 after just 28 balls including 5 fours and four sixes, just 6 runs coming from inside the boundary rope. The winning runs of the match scored from a slog over cow corner for both the win and his 50 saw the least enthusiastic celebration the 4’s have ever seen for such an occasion.
This win takes the 4’s to the top of table
